"King of the Monsters"

--

"Alive! Surging up from the depths of the sea on a Tidal Wave of Terror, to wreak vengeance on mankind!"

"IT'S ALIVE!!! A gigantic beast, stalking the earth, crushing all before it, in a psychotic cavalcade of electrifying horror! Raging through the streets, on a rampage of total destruction!"

"Incredible Titan of Terror, wiping out a city of 6 million in a Holocaust of Flame!!! Jet planes cannot destroy it! Bombs cannot kill it! All modern weapons fail!!! Is this the end of our civilization?! Can the scientists of the world find a way to stop this creature?!"

"You may wish to deny it! But your eyes tell you it's true!!!"

"Fantastic beyond comprehension! Gripping beyond compare! ASTOUNDING BEYOND BELIEF!!! THE MIGHTIEST MONSTER OF THEM ALL!!!"

"GODZILLA! KING OF THE MONSTERS!!!" ...that's what they called him. It was a time where the world thought that Japan had seen it all...but the events of World War II were merely a dark herald to what would come less than a decade later...a horror that no one in the world had ever seen and would never see coming...but he came none the less.

It all began in 1954...An American Reporter on his flight to Cairo Egypt made a stopover in Tokyo to visit an old friend, Dr. Serizawa. Upon arriving in Japan, he is immediately drawn in by a story far more interesting than anything ever heard. Somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, reports had come in saying that ships had disappeared off the surface due to a fireball from under the sea.

This intrigued Martin so greatly that he immediately radioed back to America, requesting permission to stay in Japan and report on the story. It was a story that to this day, shakes the entire world to its very core. Little did Martin know what he was getting himself into.

Days later, the entire city of Tokyo was completely destroyed. We searched for all hours of the night until we found Martin amongst the debris. His camcorder was still recording and Martin kept muttering, "This is Tokyo," over and over again.

Upon hearing the recorded journal that Martin took and seeing the footage captured on the camcorder, the entire world was shocked.

The mystery of the disappearing ships brought Martin and Paleontologist, Dr. Yamane, to Oto Island. The inhabitants believed in the possibility of a Monster God living beneath the ocean was responsible for the attacks. Their Gojira, (or Godzilla, dubbed by Martin, unable to remember the exact name) made an interesting twist for the story.

The first night on the island, the creature came ashore and nearly wiped out the village. The angry villagers gathered up all of their weapons and took to the hills to kill the beast...a grave mistake. The monster that appeared from behind the hill was gigantic, nearly four hundred feet tall. Roaring up into the skies like an angry beast, the great Godzilla's existence was finally known. The fleeing villagers ran for cover from it's wrath. The creature then returned to the ocean.

Upon returning to Japan, the scientists speculated that it was a dinosaur mutated from H-Bomb tests. The radioactivity caused it to grow so large. it was decided that the creature should be destroyed in order to protect the world. So the creature was bombed from under the sea. Nothing could survive an attack like that...but Godzilla did.

The creature followed the ships back to Tokyo and once there, it unleashed a small taste of it's destructive power before returning to the sea.

In a last ditch effort, miles of electric wires surging with 300,000 volts of electricity were strung around the city. Eventually the creature returned as Martin states.

"A prehistoric monster has just walked out of Tokyo bay. He is as tall as a thirty story building."

The electricity seemed to hold Godzilla at bay. Sparks flew from the wires as the beast roared. It seemed that eventually the creature would return to the water...but then something incredible happened. The spines along the creature's back began to glow and a buff of radioactive fire shot from the monster's mouth. It weakened the support of the towers allowing the creature to knock them down. The city was now in Godzilla's path of vengeance.

"I can't believe what has just happened. It now seems that Tokyo has no defense."

Godzilla seemed unstoppable. Buildings crumbled before him, army tanks melted before his incredible flame, and millions of people lost their lives in his wake.

"I'm saying a prayer George. A prayer for the whole world. I don't believe any force on earth or heaven can stop this creature."

Tokyo was in flames and ruin. It was only a matter of time before the building that Martin was in stood in Godzilla's path.

"This is it George. American Reporter Steve Martin, of United World News, signing off from Tokyo Japan."

Eventually Godzilla returned to the sea and a distress call from Tokyo went out to the entire world. Upon seeing the evidence on Martin's camcorder, the Nations of the world were struck with fear. What could modern weapons do against a beast like that. It was almost like a force of nature. Man's mistake using atomic weaponry personified into a living beast...the world was doomed...or was it.

From Japan, a ray of hope came. Yamane's daughter, Emiko came to Martin with the possible solution. Her fiance, Dr. Serizawa invented a device that destroyed all of the oxygen in the water, reducing everything in the area to bones.

After a little persuasion and upon realizing that the world could share the same fate as Tokyo...the doctor relented. But he threw all of his notes on the device into the fire. The oxygen destroyer would be used only once, on Godzilla...

Going out into the Sea of Japan, the monster's den was finally found. Clad in Scuba equipment, the doctor descended into the sea with his Weapon of Death and quietly stood before the now waking Godzilla. He set the device in place and waited. He refused to return to the surface, believing that someone would force him to reveal the secrets of his horrible Oxygen destroyer. So he cut his oxygen supply and waited. Godzilla approached. His mighty foot set off the device.

A geyser of bubbles erupted carrying the beast to the surface. One last horrific roar sounded out, and the beast disappeared as quickly as he came. Descending lifelessly to the bottom of the sea, the Great Godzilla was gone...leaving only a pile of bones behind.

"The menace was gone, but so was a great man. But the whole world could wake up and live again," Martin said. He was right...it was over...for now. Because this horrific and terrible ordeal, was only the beginning. And nearly a year later, Martin received news that forced him to retreat into the bomb shelter under his house...for the next Thirty years.

Godzilla Month number 1 is here. 28 more to go.
